①普通のものと異なっていること。平均的なものを超えていること。また、そのさま。特別。⇔一般・普通「－な製法で作られた薬」
②ある種類のもの全体にわたるのではなく、限られた若干のものだけにいえる・こと（さま）。⇔普遍「これは－なケースだ」「－な事例」
③〘論〙
㋐〔particular〕普遍が全体にかかわり、個別がその全体に含まれる個々の要素にかかわるのに対し、全体の一部にかかわることをいう。例えば、「人間」「この人間」に対して「ある人間」。
㋑〔special〕類種系列において、下位のものの上位のものに対するより限定されたあり方をいう。
