めい【命】
中国古代思想で、天が人に下した命令をいう。天が聖人に天下の統治を命じた「天命」に対し、広く個人の「寿命・運命」をさす。初めは、吉福や凶禍の命の受け方はその人の行為いかんによって決定されると考える「随命説」が伝統的であったが、後漢代になると、命は生を受けた時点で決定され、吉凶禍福は個人の努力の及ぶところではないとする「宿命論」に変わった。
