１ほどこし。布施。転じて、布施をする人。檀越(だんおつ)。檀家。
２商家の奉公人などが男の主人を敬っていう語。「店の大—」
３商人が男の得意客を、また役者や芸人が自分のひいき筋を敬っていう語。また一般に、金持ちや身分のある男性を敬っていう。「—、これはよい品でございますよ」「顔見世に—衆を招く」
４妻が夫をいう語。他家の夫をいう場合もある。「お宅の—」
５妾(めかけ)の主人。パトロン。「—がつく」「—を取る」
