宣伝
一定の目標のもとに、世論を操作し、その判断や行為を特定の方向に誘導することを宣伝という。歴史的には、最初に宗教上の布教（1622年）から出発し、18世紀末以降、政治的な思想普及の有力な手段として使われた。その後産業社会の発展とともに商業宣伝としての形が生まれた。広告と宣伝を同じ意味に解釈することも多く、方法も類似している。

宣伝propaganda
特定の組織や個人が、ある目標の達成のために、さまざまコミュニケーション手段を使うことで、多数の人々の態度や行動を自分たちの意図のする方向に導こうとする活動のこと。ローマカトリックの普教活動に由来する。欧米ではナチスやソ連の情報活動や政治宣言を連想させるネガティブなイメージが強い。日本では広告やマーケティング活動全般を指して使われることが多く、きちんと区別されていない。
