１名望のある家柄。名門。「—の出」
２公卿の家格の一。文筆を主とし、弁官を経て、蔵人(くろうど)を兼ね、大納言まで昇進できる家柄。羽林家(うりんけ)の下、諸大夫家(しょだいぶけ)の上に位する。日野・広橋・烏丸・葉室・勧修寺・万里小路(までのこうじ)などの諸家の称。
３その道にすぐれた人。名声の高い人。名人。「—の手になる書」
４中国、春秋戦国時代の諸子百家の一。名（ことば）と実（事物）との関係を論じた学派。
